Guide How to switch from LastPass to Bitwarden or 1Password, step by step

Here is how to switch from LastPass to Bitwarden or 1Password without losing a single login. The direct import takes care of most of the work, and the rest is careful checking and tidying up.

The short version

Use the direct LastPass import in Bitwarden's browser extension or desktop app, or in the 1Password desktop app, so no unencrypted file ever touches your disk.

Make a list of every account that uses LastPass for two-factor codes or passkeys before you start, because those do not come across in a CSV export.

Keep LastPass for a week or two after the move, then cancel auto-renewal before you delete the account.

This guide is for anyone in the US, the UK or India who keeps their passwords in LastPass and wants to move to Bitwarden or 1Password. By the end you will have every login, note and card in your new password manager, your two-factor codes and passkeys set up again, and your LastPass account closed safely.

Many people started looking again after June 2026. LastPass said on 22 June that an attacker had got into Klue, a market intelligence service its sales and marketing teams used, and taken customer names, phone and email details, postal addresses, support case data and sales data. LastPass said its own products and infrastructure were not affected and that customer vaults remain secure. It also reminded customers that no one at LastPass will ever ask for their master password. Whether you switch or stay, watch out for phishing emails and calls that use those details.

How to switch from LastPass at a glance

Both Bitwarden and 1Password can sign in to LastPass for you and pull your vault across directly. If that does not work, you can export a CSV file from LastPass and upload it instead. The table shows what each route moves, according to the vendors' own help pages.

RouteWhere you run itLeft behind
Bitwarden direct importBitwarden browser extension or desktop appFile attachments (add them by hand)
1Password direct import1Password desktop app for Mac, Windows or LinuxPasskeys, LastPass Authenticator codes, password history for private items
CSV file (either service)LastPass, then Bitwarden or 1Password on the webAttachments, two-factor codes stored on items, custom fields; 1Password's web import also skips form fills and passkeys

What you will need

  • Your LastPass email address and master password, plus your usual LastPass two-step login method.

  • A computer with the Bitwarden browser extension or desktop app, or the 1Password desktop app.

  • A new Bitwarden or 1Password account. Bitwarden has a free plan. 1Password has a 14-day free trial with no card needed, then you pay.

  • Your phone, for setting up two-factor codes again.

  • Time to check your most important logins one by one after the import.

Step 1: Pick your new password manager and create the account

Choose Bitwarden if you want a free plan with no device limit or open-source code. Choose 1Password if you want a polished paid app with family sharing for up to five people. Bitwarden's Families plan covers six.

Where your data lives differs by service. Bitwarden stores cloud data in the US or the EU, with no UK or India region, so pick vault.bitwarden.com (US) or vault.bitwarden.eu (EU) when you sign up and use the same one every time. 1Password stores your data in the region of the currency you pay in, and it bills in US dollars, Canadian dollars or euros only, so UK and Indian readers pay in a foreign currency.

Step 2: Prepare your LastPass account

Sign in to LastPass and open each item that shows a two-factor code. Write down which accounts they are, because LastPass does not export the one-time codes it generates inside your vault. Do the same for any passkeys, since LastPass says passkeys cannot be exported or transferred.

If you plan to use 1Password and your LastPass account uses text message (SMS) codes for two-step login, switch to another method first. 1Password's importer needs that change. If you use Duo, follow 1Password's separate preparation steps.

Step 3: Import directly from LastPass

Into Bitwarden

  1. Log in to the Bitwarden browser extension or desktop app.

  2. In the extension, open the Settings tab, choose Vault, then Import items. In the desktop app, choose Import from the menu.

  3. Pick your vault, an optional folder, and set File format to LastPass. Choose the option to import directly from LastPass.

  4. Enter your LastPass email, select Import data, then enter your LastPass master password and any one-time code. For Duo, only in-app approval works.

Into 1Password

  1. Open the 1Password desktop app and sign in.

  2. On a Mac, choose File, Import, LastPass. On Windows or Linux, select the ellipsis menu, then Import, LastPass.

  3. Enter your LastPass account details, choose the 1Password account to import into, and select Next, then Import.

1Password turns LastPass folders into tags and adds a LastPass tag to every imported item. Shared folders become vaults, but only someone who is an administrator of that shared folder can import it.

Step 4: Use a CSV file only if the direct import fails

A CSV export is a plain, unencrypted copy of every password you own, so treat it as a last resort. Before you start, 1Password advises turning off any backup software so the file is not copied to the cloud.

  1. In the LastPass browser extension, go to the Account tab, then Fix a problem yourself, Export vault items, Export data for use anywhere. Enter your master password and select Continue. A CSV file downloads.

  2. On the LastPass website instead, select Advanced options, then Export. LastPass emails you a verification link that expires after 10 minutes. Select Continue export in the email, then go back to Advanced options and Export again.

  3. For Bitwarden, sign in to the web vault, choose Tools, then Import, set the format to LastPass and choose the file. For 1Password, sign in on 1Password.com, select your name, then Import, LastPass, pick a vault and upload the file.

Bitwarden warns that some special characters in passwords, such as the ampersand, can appear in a coded form in exports. Search the file for them and fix them before you import.

Step 5: Check the import

Count roughly how many items you had in LastPass and compare. Then open a handful of logins you use every week, such as your email, bank and phone provider, and sign in with the new extension. In 1Password, also look in the Imported Unknown Data vault, where account settings and other leftovers land as notes, and archive anything you do not need. Re-attach any files you had stored in LastPass, because Bitwarden's import and both CSV routes leave attachments behind.

Step 6: Move your two-factor codes and passkeys

Go back to the list you made in Step 2. For each account, sign in to the website, open its security settings, and set up two-factor authentication again, scanning the QR code with your new manager. 1Password can save one-time codes in its browser extension, apps or on 1Password.com. Bitwarden lets every account store an authenticator key, but generating the codes needs Premium or a paid family or team plan. On Bitwarden's free plan, use a separate authenticator app instead.

Passkeys need a fresh start. Sign in with your password, create a new passkey and save it in Bitwarden or 1Password, then remove the old LastPass passkey from that site's security settings.

Step 7: Delete the export file and close LastPass

If you made a CSV file, delete it and empty your computer's bin or recycle bin, then turn your backup software back on. Uninstall the LastPass extension so it does not fight the new one for autofill.

When you are sure nothing is missing, close LastPass. If you pay for LastPass Premium, cancel auto-renewal first. Then sign in, go to Account settings, open My Account and choose Delete or reset Account. LastPass says deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the CSV in Downloads. Anyone with access to your computer, or your cloud backup, can read every password in it.

  • Importing twice. Bitwarden does not check for duplicates, so a second import doubles every item.

  • Deleting LastPass too soon. Your two-factor codes and passkeys live there until you move them.

  • Forgetting the renewal. Deleting the account does not cancel a LastPass Premium subscription for you.

  • Hitting Bitwarden's free collection limit. A free Bitwarden organization allows two collections. If you import into one from a file with three or more LastPass groupings, Bitwarden's help page explains how to remove the grouping column first.

Check it worked

  • Your item count in the new manager roughly matches LastPass.

  • Autofill works on your email, bank and shopping sites in the new extension.

  • Every account on your Step 2 list signs in with a code or passkey from the new manager.

  • The CSV file, if you made one, is gone from your computer and its bin.

  • LastPass shows no active subscription, and the extension is removed from every browser.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to switch from LastPass?

Yes, if you use the direct import or delete the CSV file straight after using it. Keep your LastPass account until you have checked everything and moved your two-factor codes and passkeys.

Can I import LastPass passwords into Bitwarden for free?

Yes. Bitwarden's free plan includes the LastPass import and stores unlimited logins on unlimited devices. Generating two-factor codes inside Bitwarden needs a paid plan, so free users can keep those in a separate authenticator app.

Does LastPass export include passkeys and two-factor codes?

No. LastPass does not export the one-time codes it generates in your vault, and it says passkeys cannot be exported or transferred. You need to set both up again in your new password manager.

Was my LastPass vault affected by the June 2026 Klue breach?

LastPass says no. It says the attacker took contact details, support case data and sales data from Klue, a third-party service, and that customer vaults remain secure.

How do I delete my LastPass account after switching?

Cancel any LastPass Premium auto-renewal first. Then sign in, go to Account settings, open My Account and choose Delete or reset Account. Deletion is permanent, so only do it once your new vault is complete.
