What others measured

Our 1Password review is based on its official plans, terms and features, as our editorial team has not tested it. It is a paid-only password manager with apps for every major platform, Watchtower breach alerts, a Secret Key on top of your account password and a 14-day free trial. The main catches are that there is no free plan and no refund once you are charged.

Results published by independent testers, not by us. Each tester uses their own method, so their figures may not compare directly with each other.

Fit

Who it suits

Choose 1Password if

Choose it if you want one paid app for you or up to five family members across Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android and Linux, with breach alerts and easy sharing. It also suits businesses that need single sign-on and identity-provider integrations.

Look elsewhere if

Look elsewhere if you want a free plan, pricing in pounds or rupees, or the chance of a refund after you subscribe. Budget buyers will find free and cheaper paid options elsewhere.

Questions people ask

Is 1Password worth paying for?

On paper it offers more than basic password storage, including breach alerts, secure sharing, Travel Mode and encrypted file storage. Whether it is worth it depends on whether you need those extras, because free password managers cover the basics.

Does 1Password have a free version?

No. There is a 14-day free trial of the Individual, Families and business plans with no credit card required, but you need a paid plan after that.

Can I get a refund from 1Password?

1Password says it cannot refund past charges or any time left on your account when you cancel. If you cancel during the free trial you are not charged, so use the trial to decide.

How many people can use 1Password Families?

The Families plan includes five users, and members can share unlimited vaults while keeping personal items private. The plan also allows five guest accounts for limited vault sharing.

Is 1Password available in the UK and India?

Yes, but plans are priced in US dollars, Canadian dollars or euros, not pounds or rupees. You create your account in the US, Canada or EU region, which sets where your data is stored and your billing currency.

Has 1Password been independently audited?

1Password says it is independently audited by third-party security experts, and its business page lists SOC 2 Type II certification. We have not found a published pass or fail result from an auditor, so we do not rate it on that.
