Independent results

What others measured

Our Bitwarden review is based on its official plans, terms and features, as our editorial team has not tested it. The free plan already covers unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, and paid plans add vault health reports, emergency access, file storage and more two-step login options. Published tests put its autofill slightly behind some paid rivals.

Results published by independent testers, not by us. Each tester uses their own method, so their figures may not compare directly with each other.

Autofill success

Measured by Tech Insider, April 2026. Autofill attempted on 50 test sites (44 of 50 filled correctly).

Weaknesses on paper

  • Prices are shown only in US dollars, with no pound or rupee pricing

Fit

Who it suits

Choose Bitwarden if

Choose it if you want a free plan with no device limit, open-source code or the option to host it on your own server. Families of up to six and teams that pay per user also get a lot for a modest price.

Look elsewhere if

Look elsewhere if you want pricing in pounds or rupees, or if the best autofill in published tests is your top priority. Premium does not list a free trial, so you would rely on the 30-day refund window instead.

Questions people ask

Is Bitwarden really free?

Yes. The free plan is always free and includes unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, sharing with one other user and two-step login with an authenticator app, email or a security key. Paid plans add security reports, file storage and more.

Is Bitwarden safe to use?

Bitwarden uses zero-knowledge encryption and its code is open source, so anyone can inspect it. Every plan also supports two-step login, including hardware security keys.

Can I get a refund from Bitwarden?

Yes, if your subscription is less than 30 days old you can contact Bitwarden for a refund. Subscriptions older than 30 days are not eligible.

Does Bitwarden have a free trial?

New Families, Teams and Enterprise organizations get a 14-day free trial. Premium does not list a trial, but the free plan lets you try the core features first.

Bitwarden vs 1Password: which is better?

On paper, Bitwarden wins on price, offers a free plan and lets you self-host, while 1Password is paid-only. Published tests put 1Password's autofill slightly ahead, so the choice comes down to budget against polish.

Where does Bitwarden store my data?

The Bitwarden cloud stores data in either the United States or the European Union, and your account stays in the region where you created it. Readers in the UK and India can choose either region, or host Bitwarden on their own server.
